Box Score

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - After falling behind 2-1 the University of Charleston volleyball team took control of the contest mid-way through the fourth set en route to taking the final two sets in recording the 3-2 victory over rival West Virginia State, Wednesday evening.

WVSU narrowly outhit Charleston in the first set, but the home team committed five errors to allow the Yellow Jackets to close out the set down the stretch with little pressure for the 25-21 set win. UC found a groove going to Victoria Severo (Meadville, PA) in the middle of the court to get the second set started and held on to the lead by forcing 11 errors by WV State for the 25-22 match tying win.

With the match deadlocked at a game apiece Charleston was unable to keep pace with the Yellow Jackets who put together their best effort of the evening. WVSU hit .444 with just two errors to 18 kills to run away to a 25-18 third set win to put the home team on edge headed to game four.

The fourth set saw just one lead change as UC went to the hitting duo of Severo and Malleri Hardison (Uniontown, PA) to get points the Yellow Jackets were unable to counter. Charleston hit just .062, but forced a game-high 12 errors at the net by WVSU to take a 25-18 win to deadlock the match for the second time on the evening and force a deciding fifth set.

It didn't take long to decide a winner in the fifth set as the University of Charleston committed just one errors behind nine kills to easily secure the 15-9 set score and take the 3-2 match victory.

Ashley Douglas (Amherstburg, Canada) paced the defensive effort as the match featured many long vollies with 18 digs, while Hardison followed just behind with 15. Kelsey Eby (Portland, OR) directed the Charleston offense with 47 assists.
