CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Despite controlling possession and outplaying their opponent for much for the contest the University of Charleston fell victim to one great run that ended in the game-winning goal for Mercyhurst in the Second Round of the 2012 NCAA Tournament, Saturday evening.
Off the opening touch Charleston (13-2-4) was in control of the contest with crisp passing to keep the Laker (15-5-1) defense spread across the field, yet their 7-to-1 advantage in shots made no difference on the scoreboard in the opening stanza.
UC saw much of the same in the second half with Mercyhurst making small bursts into their territory but with little threat on goal.
Sean Teepen (Cincinnati, OH) made three great saves on the only close looks the Lakers had to keep the scoreboard blank with both teams making overtime seem a likely possibility.
Mercyhurst took advantage of the single mistake UC committed with a turnover midway into the Golden Eagle zone resulting in a two on two breakaway through the middle of the field. The Lakers found the net when Alex Manea threaded the ball between the defenders allowing Sam Dorf to place the ball into the top right corner of the goal just out of Teepen's reach with only 2:29 remaining to play.
The University of Charleston managed two looks on goal just before the end of the contest yet were unable to respond on the scoreboard as their great season slipped away when the clock reach zeros.\
For the night the home squad outshot Mercyhurst 13-to-5 with each team seeing four shots on goal.
Charleston closes the 2012 campaign with a 13-2-4 record.
