Roberts and Kirkland Take Top WVIAC Honors

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Senior running back Jordan Roberts and head football coach Pat Kirkland grabbed top honors as the WVIAC Yearly awards were announced by the league office, Tuesday afternoon.

Roberts, a native of Madison, W. Va., rushed for a league-best and school single-season record 1,572 yards and 18 touchdowns this season. He also led the way with a conference-best 197 all-purpose yards a game, which ranked fourth in NCAA Division II.

Roberts also leads the WVIAC in scoring (122 points/11.1 ppg), which ranks him fourth nationally. His play led the Golden Eagles to a 9-2 record and a spot in the AFCA Top 25, for only the second time in school history.

In his last collegiate game, Roberts set NCAA records for most rushing yards in a quarter (190) and in a half (273). He ranks in the top-10 nationally in all-purpose yards (third), scoring (fourth) and rushing (sixth). It is the first time that a student-athlete from UC has won the top conference award.

In his second season, Kirkland guided Charleston to a tie for second place in the WVIAC. He helped the Golden Eagles reach a top-25 ranking earlier this season. Kirkland’s team was selected to finish fourth in the WVIAC Preseason Poll. He led UC to a win over nationally-ranked UNC Pembroke by a 42-30 score. Several of Kirkland’s student-athletes are among the NCAA Division II leaders en route to Kirkland becoming the first University of Charleston coach to earn the yearly conference award.

The University of Charleston offensive line led the way for the No. 12 ranked running attack in NCAA Division II leading to multiple honorees across the front. George Davila (Naples, FL), Nick Lepak (Auburn, NY) and Matt Farhat (Bradenton, FL) each grabbed First Team honors, while Ross May (Purcellville, VA) took a spot on the Second Team.

UC's defense was pestered opponents all season long with the Golden Eagles finishing the season third in the country for the fewest yards allowed to opponents. Other national rankings for the formidable Charleston defense included the No. 8 eight pass defense and No. 6 team in total sacks.

Jeff Green (Johnson City, TN), Isaiah Gibson (Hampton, VA) and Matt Kelly (Cincinnati, OH) were each named to the WVIAC First Team defense. Green led the team and conference with 13 sacks this season to set a new school single-season record. Gibson was the leader of the secondary unit as the sixth-best tackler for the Golden Eagles finishing 2012 with 43 stops with two interceptions. Kelly led a stout linebacker corp with 51 tackles, five of which were for a loss to go along with two interceptions.

Charleston's top special teams weapon became a two-time winner this season. Puma Nuredini (Naples, FL) landed First Team honors as a kicker and a Second Team award as a punter. Nuredini was 13-of-18 on field goal attempts this year as he became a great option for Kirkland when UC drives were stalled in opponent territory. His 49 yarder set a new school-record.  If the team couldn't get in field goal range Nuredini was a force in turning the field for the great University of Charleston defense. On the season he averaged a WVIAC-high 40.4 yards per punt with ten 50+ yard efforts including a school-record 68 yard blast.

Trei Kelly (Glen Allen, VA) landed a spot on the Honorable Mention squad, while young starters Justin Avery (Charlotte, NC) and Shaq Williams (Charleston,WV) were Special Honorable Mention selections.

Kelly developed into a shutdown corner in just his second season at UC, becoming an integral part of the top pass defense in the league. Avery was another sophomore that had an outstanding season as Charleston's tackling leader at 55, which included nine for a loss along with an interception. Williams made a splash against opposing defenses as the Golden Eagles top receiver in his first season on the field. He accounted for 37 catches for 480 yards and five touchdowns, along with booking a school-record 99 yard touchdown reception from quarterback John Knox (Salisbury,NC).
