DAHLONEGA, Ga. - Freshman
Emily Fultz (Germantown, OH) struck again this weekend for two Top-25 wins, including an upset of No. 2 ranked North Gearogia who fell to the University of Charleston softball team 3-2 on Sunday afternoon.
North Georgia (26-4) entered the afternoon contest against the Golden Eagles (8-8) after upsetting Alabama-Huntsville, the top-ranked team in Division II, in an impressive 10-5 outing. The Saints looked to be on track to taking over the top-seed in the next week's poll by opening the scoring against Charleston with a two-run homerun in the second inning.
After allowing the deep-ball Fultz found her composure to lock down and retake control of the game. Leading hitter
Logan Tretick (Round Hill, VA) assisted UC in cutting the deficit in half with an RBI single through the middle of the infield to plate
Andrea Hayes (Columbus, OH) and set the score at 2-1.
Fultz kept her poise against the national title contenders allowing just one hit over the next three innings, while the University of Charleston found success offensively to open the sixth inning.
Tretick again jolted the Golden Eagles offensively in the visitors side of the sixth with a single through the right side. Senior
Ashlea Wallace (Winfield, WV) followed with a hard-hit double down the left field line to put the go-ahead run in scoring position with just one out in the inning.
Aspen Echelmeier (Auburn, CA) did enough to plate the game tying run with a ground ball back to the pitcher to bring
Jacqueline Carlin (Whittier, CA) to the plate with two-outs and the go-ahead run just sixty feet away. Carlin came up big with her only hit of the day as she scorched a ball to the left side of the infield that was fielded by the shortstop who was unable to make the throw to first in time. Wallace crossed the plate on the play to give the Golden Eagles a 3-2 advantage and needing just six outs to pull off the upset.
Even with the lead Fultz wasn't out of trouble against one of the best teams in the country as North Georgia threatened with a one-out double in the home half of the sixth inning. Fultz managed to get the second out in the inning with a strikeout after the runner advanced to third base via a wild pitch. With the game tying runner at third head coach Ray Loeser made the call to intentionally walk six hitter Kayla Minger who had already registered two hits in the contest.
Fultz came back strong to hold the advantage for UC as she induced a ground ball to Wallace allowing the Golden Eagles to easily end the threat with the single run lead intact. She locked down the seventh inning with three fly-ball outs to secure the big upset win for Charleston.
North Georgia out hit UC 7-4, yet Fultz delivered when the game was on the line with a complete game effort in registering her sixth win of the season. Tretick paced Charleston with a 2-for-3 performance with an RBI and run scored.
The upset comes on the heels of another great victory for the University of Charleston from the weekend tournament at North Georgia.
Charleston took another Top-25 victory by slipping past No. 24 Columbus State 2-1 on Saturday afternoon.
Fultz took the win over the Cougars (19-9) by allowing just a single run on five hits in 7.0 innings of action, while striking out nine CSU hitters.
At the plate UC was able to book just four hits, but Echelmeier connected when it mattered as she drove in all the offense the Golden Eagles would need with a two-run homerun in the top of the fifth inning.
