CANTON, Ohio - Behind the hot hand of hurler
Emily Fultz (Germantown, OH) the University of Charleston softball team made short work of Malone with a doubleheader sweep by scores of 9-1 and 3-1, Tuesday afternoon.
Fultz (7-3) opened the series on fire with five strikeouts in the first two innings of play, while
Micki Murzynski (Erie, PA) put the Golden Eagles (10-8) on the board first when she crossed the plate on a misplayed ball in the second.
Angel Withrow expanded the advantage (3-1) that Fultz had to work with when she hammered a ball beyond the outfield fence with two outs in the top of the fourth inning.
Bethany Cera (Bellaire, OH) scored on the homerun after booking a single to left field earlier in the inning.
Allowing just one hit through the first five innings of play Fultz was cruising towards her seventh win of the season when the University of Charleston offense exploded for six runs and put the contest into "mercy" rule territory.
The big inning in the top of the sixth allowed the Golden Eagles to go all the way through the batting order with a three-RBI double off the bat of
Aspen Echelmeier (Auburn, CA) highlighting the decisive frame.
Malone managed a run in the bottom of the sixth, but it would not be enough to stave off a shortened contest as UC secured the 9-1 victory.
The Pioneers (1-7) had their second hopes at a win dashed immediately when Charleston's leading-hitter Logan Tretick opened the contest with her first homerun of the season for a quick 1-0 lead.
Kelsee Blackwell (New Castle, IN) handled the pitching duties for UC and worked through the Malone lineup spot-free for the first two innings, but the Pioneers opened the third with a triple to right field leading to a 1-1 deadlock.
The bats went quiet for both teams for the next two innings before Charleston decided to use the long-ball again in order to control the contest.
Angel Withrow (Cross Lanes, WV) put two marks in the RBI column with a hard-hit smash over the left field wall to give the Golden Eagles a 3-1 advantage.
Fultz came in to close the final three innings in the circle for the University of Charleston as she struck out three, while registering her first career save. Blackwell recorded her first win of the season after striking out six batters in 4.0 innings of action.
UC continues its tour of Canton, OH with a doubleheader against Walsh on Wednesday, March 14 with first pitch slated for 2:00 pm
