CHARLESTON, W.Va. -
Janeen Vazquez (Cincinnati, OH) rounded the bases twice as she collected six RBIs to seal a 10-1 mercy rule win over Fairmont State as the University of Charleston softball team captured two WVIAC wins over the Fighting Falcons, Monday night.
Charleston (16-12) got behind ace and reining WVIAC Pitcher of the Week
Emily Fultz (Germantown, OH) with an aggresive offensive attack in the opening contest. Senior
Ashlea Wallace (Winfield, WV) created the first threat for UC in the first inning by stealing third base then scoring on a gutsy move on a
Jacqueline Carlin (Whittier, CA) ground ball to third base for the quick 1-0 advantage.
A fielding error allowed Fairmont State to plate the tying run in the top of the third, but the Golden Eagles didn't wait long to respond with a breakaway inning in the fifth.
Kimberley Giannini (River Grove, IL) and
Bethany Cera (Bellaire, OH) opened the home half of the fifth with back-to-back singles. Giannini got the scoring started on the Cera hit, while Logan Tretick plated the second run of the inning with a hotly-hit single to centerfield allowing Cera to score.
Tretick advanced to third base on a single by designated player
Aspen Echelmeier (Auburn, CA) then crossed the plate on a passed ball for the third and final run of the inning with the Golden Eagles ahead 4-1.
FSU plated a run in the top of the sixth, yet Charleston responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the sixth giving Fultz enough room to secure the 5-2 victory.
Fultz captured her 11th win of her rookie season with a seven hit complete game effort, while striking out seven Fighting Falcon batters.
Game two turned into the Vazquez deep-ball clinic as she accounted for six runs batted in and two runs scored to pace the University of Charleston to an impressive 10-1 mercy rule win.
Blackwell did her part in keeping the Fighting Falcon offense quiet as she allowed just one baserunner in the first three innings of action, while her Golden Eagle teammates pulled away to a 5-0 lead.
Andrea Hayes (Columbus, OH) opened the scoring for UC with an RBI double in the bottom of the second to plate
Angel Withrow (Cross Lanes, WV) who singled to open the inning. Vazquez then struck with her first three-run blast well beyond the right-center fence just ahead of another Hayes RBI hit to end the inning.
Fairmont State got their only run of the contest via a solo homerun in the fourth to get within 5-1 before Blackwell finished out the inning. A Charleston response was imminent and the Golden Eagles lineup delivered with two-runs in the bottom half of the inning by taking advantage of an FSU fielding error.
Fultz returned to close out the Fighting Falcons in order in the fifth and sixth innings, while Vazquez blasted the three-run walk-off blast in the bottom of the sixth to secure the 10-1 mercy rule victory.
For the contest Vazquez finished 2-of-4 at the plate but accounted for six runs batted in and two runs scored.
The Golden Eagles take their current four-game West Virginia Conference winning-streak on the road to Wheeling Jesuit on Wednesday, March 28 for a 3:00 pm doubleheader.
