WHEELING, W.Va. - The University of Charleston softball team moved to 6-0 in West Virginia Conference play after hammering out 18 hits in 12-2 and 6-1 wins over Wheeling Jesuit, Wednesday afternoon.
Logan Tretick (Round Hill, VA) capped a big five run second inning that got the scoring started in game one with a three-run homerun.
Bethany Cera (Bellaire, OH) and
Andrea Hayes (Columbus, OH) each registered RBIs in the inning that put the visiting Golden Eagles in control of the contest.
The big lead was plenty for Charleston ace
Emily Fultz (Germantown, OH) to work with. Fultz allowed two runs in the complete game effort, only one of which was earned as she struck out six Cardinal hitters.
UC tacked on two additional runs in the third inning as
Jacqueline Carlin (Whittier, CA),
Janeen Vazquez (Cincinnati, OH) and
Angel Withrow (Cross Lanes, WV) strung together three-consecutive singles to open the inning. Withrow and Cera each booked an RBI to put Charleston ahead 7-1.
Wheeling Jesuit made it 7-2 in the fourth before the University of Charleston again extended their lead with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
Charleston closed the contest with a big three-run inning in their final at-bat behind a two-RBI double from Carlin.
Cera led the way for UC at the plate going 2-for-2 with two doubles. With the win Fultz grabs her 12th victory of her rookie season and dropped her overall earned run average to 2.28.
Game two started off rocky for the University of Charleston with two fielding errors leading to an unearned run for Wheeling Jesuit.
The deficit didn't last long for the Golden Eagles as for the second time on the day the visitors opened an inning with back-to-back-to-back singles, while Cera and Hayes came through with RBI knocks to retake the lead 3-1.
Getting on the scoreboard was all Coach Loeser's squad had to do as
Kelsee Blackwell (New Castle, IN) put together a nearly spotless performance for six innings in the circle.
Carlin and Vazquez each plated a run in the third inning before
Ashlea Wallace (Winfield, WV) crossed the plate in the fifth to wrap up the scoring for UC.
Blackwell allowed just two hits and struck out six batters through six innings of work before giving way to freshman
Courtney Fain (Urbana, OH) who closed the final inning.
At the plate Vazquez went 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored.
The Golden Eagles stay in conference play with a test this Saturday, March 31 at 1:00 pm with a doubleheader at Kanawha Valley rival WV State who currently stands at 22-7 overall with a 5-1 WVIAC mark.
