CHARLESTON, W.Va. -
Janeen Vazquez (Cincinnati, OH) showed why she is one of the top sluggers in the West Virginia Conference with three doubles and a homerun to lead the University of Charleston softball team to a doubleheader sweep of conference foe Concord, Wednesday afternoon.
Charleston (26-14, 14-2) ace
Emily Fultz (Germantown, OH) got the eight-game homestand started on the right note with a complete game, 12 strikeout effort in game one.
The visitors got on the board first against Fultz by capitalizing on a first inning error, but after that point the UC hurler locked the Mountain Lions down as her offense provided plenty of support with eight hits.
Vazquez highlighted the University of Charleston scoring with a third inning solo blast, while her teammates assisted in the home team crossing the plate for single runs in the second, third, fourth and sixth innings.
Samantha Herndon (Berryville, VA) laid down two sacrifice bunts and drove two runs in as she recorded a hit in her only official at-bat on the afternoon joining Vazquez and
Micki Murzynski (Erie, PA) to account for the 4-1 victory.
The second game started off eerily similar to the first as Concord managed to open the scoring after a fielding error by the University of Charleston for a quick 1-0 advantage.
UC didn't waste time as Vazquez started the home teams first at-bat with a double to left-center before scoring on a groundball off the bat of
Aspen Echelmeier (Auburn, CA). Senior
Logan Tretick (Round Hill, VA) followed with a towering blast that found the jet-stream out of the UC Softball Complex for a solo homerun to hand the Golden Eagles a 2-1 lead they wouldn't relinquish.
Charleston starter
Kelsee Blackwell (New Castle, IN) cruised for the next four innings, while her offense tacked on three additional runs in the bottom of the fifth inning off a Mountain Lion fielding error. Vazquez capped the three run spurt with her second double of the contest that scored Herndon.
CU looked to make a comeback attempt with a single and RBI double to force Blackwell from the mound as head coach Ray Loeser handed the reins to freshman
Courtney Fain (Urbana, OH). Fain found a rough task in slowing the Mountain Lion charge but got out of the inning with the Golden Eagles ahead 5-4.
Tretick gave her teammates a jumpstart with a single in the bottom of the fifth as the home squad looked to put the sweep in the books.
Jacqueline Carlin (Whittier, CA) followed with another single before
Ayla Santos (Calvert County, MD) delivered a two-RBI double to give the Golden Eagles some breathing room. Withrow struck in the next at-bat with an RBI double to right-center field to expand the advantage to 8-4.
Capitalizing on a fielding error by Concord Herndon, Vazquez and
Ashlea Wallace (Winfield, WV) each booked consecutive RBI hits with the Wallace single through the middle proving to be enough to vault the University of Charleston to an eight-run mercy rule victory at 12-4.
Blackwell grabs her seventh victory of the season after going 4.0 innings as she allowed one earned run and seven hits.
At the plate, Vazquez recorded a 3-for-4 effort with three doubles, two runs scored and two runs batted in. Wallace was a perfect 2-for-2 in the game, while Tretick, Santos and
Kimberley Giannini (River Grove, IL) each accounted for two-hits each.
The Golden Eagles return to the UC Softball Complex on Saturday, April 14 for a pivotal West Virginia Conference matchup against contender Shepherd beginning at 1:00 pm.
