Vazquez Keeps Softball Just Ahead of Seton Hill

Janeen Vazquez

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Seton Hill got more than enough of Janeen Vazquez (Cincinnati, OH) as the leading hitter for the University of Charleston softball team scorched the Griffins for five hits leading to a sweep by scores of 4-3 and 3-2, Sunday afternoon.

Seton Hill jolted UC ace Emily Fultz (Germantown, OH) with two-runs in the first inning of game one, but the Golden Eagles came back strong in the home half of the frame.

In her new found home at the top of the batting order Jacqueline Carlin (Whittier, CA) got the home crowd on their feet with a blast off the left-center fence for two-bases. Carlin scored two-batters later when Vazquez lined a ball through the middle of the infield for her first strike of the day to pull within 2-1.

Carlin's second at-bat proved to also be a scoring effort as she crossed the plate for the equalizer in the third inning on a Logan Tretick (Round Hill, VA) suicide squeeze bunt. Carlin opened the inning with a smashed line drive to left.

The University of Charleston gave Fultz the lead she had fought for when a Griffin fielding error allowed Aspen Echelmeier (Auburn, CA) to reach opening the bottom of the fourth. Samantha Herndon (Berryville, VA) was called upon from the bench and came through with a pinch hit single just beyond the reach of the Seton Hill secondbaseman for a 3-2 score.

Vazquez nailed what would become a pivitol strike with a screaming homerun well beyond the center field fence to hand her pitcher a 4-2 cushion.

Fultz went the distance to secure the win by putting Seton Hill away during a sixth inning comeback attempt with a big strikeout, before cruising through the seventh for her 18th victory of the season.

For the game, Vazquez filled up the scorebook with a 3-for-3 effort that included two-RBIs and a run scored.

Game two saw the Griffins tag University of Charleston starter Kelsee Blackwell (New Castle, IN) for single runs in the first and third innings for a quick 2-0 lead, while the Golden Eagle bats worked through a cold-streak.

UC kept picking away at the Seton Hill defense until finally forcing a mistake to start the fifth inning. Bethany Cera (Bellaire, OH) hit a hard ground ball to short and hustled down the line to force an errant throw giving Charleston new life.

Echelmeier followed Cera with a single through the left-side. The Golden Eagles put both runners in scoring position when Ayla Santos (Calvert County, MD) executed a great sacrifice bunt. For the second time in as many games Herndon was given the nod from the bench and yet again she pulled through with a timely single to center to plate Cera.

With the pressure on Carlin stepped to the plate red-hot and drove her third consecutive single to the outfield to score both runners.

Blackwell took the narrow lead and made it stand up as she got stronger in the final two innings of action. She registered her eighth win of the season with five strikeouts in a complete game effort.

Vazquez stayed steady at the plate by going 2-of-3 in the second game that included her team-leading eighth double of the year.
