CHARLESTON, W.Va. -
Courtney Fain (Urbana, OH) and
Kelsee Blackwell (New Castle, IN) each tossed complete game shutouts for the University of Charleston softball team in a West Virginia Conference sweep of Bluefield State, Tuesday afternoon.
UC (30-16) showed off their red-hot bats from the opening pitch as
Jacqueline Carlin (Whittier, CA),
Ashlea Wallace (Winfield, WV) and
Janeen Vazquez (Cincinnati, OH) opened the game with three-consecutive singles.
Aspen Echelmeier (Auburn, CA) drew a bases-loaded walk for the first mark in the scorebook just ahead of a
Logan Tretick (Round Hill, VA) RBI single through the middle.
A passed ball and RBI's by
Ayla Santos (Calvert County, MD) and
Andrea Hayes (Columbus, OH) rounded out the offensive onslaught for Charleston in the first inning to hand Fain all the advantage she needed at 5-0.
The University of Charleston tacked on three runs in the third when a Wallace single drove home Santos before Vazquez collected her second smash of the day for two-RBIs. The 8-0 lead was plenty for Fain to work with, yet UC added one additional run for good measure the next inning with Santos grabbing her second RBI of the game.
Fain scattered two hits in the five inning mercy-rule victory, while striking out seven Lady Blues for her first career shutout.
At the plate, Santos and Vazquez each were a perfect 3-for-3.
The second game came after Senior Day festivities for four University of Charleston seniors one of which also registered a career mark in the win.
Senior
Kelsee Blackwell (New Castle, IN) matched Fain with a complete game shutout, while striking out 12 hitters and allowing just four hits. The complete game shutout is the first of Blackwell's career.
In her final home contest as a Golden Eagle,
Micki Murzynski (Erie, PA) got the action started with the first run of the contest after starting the second inning with a picture perfect bunt single. UC got their second run of the inning on a slap-single by Hayes who found success on the day from the left-side of the plate.
Charleston added a single unearned run in the third inning off a Lady Blues fielding error before Tretick struck for an RBI double to left-center field for a 4-0 advantage.
The play of the game came in the sixth when
Kimberley Giannini (River Grove, IL) unexpectedly found herself taking a deadsprint around the base paths. Giannini struck a well hit ball to right that was misplayed by the Bluefield State defense and rolled to the wall. She sped around the diamond for 240 feet for the final run to set the score at 6-0.
Blackwell allowed four hits in her 7.0 innings in the circle, but was never threatened while going the distance for her ninth victory of the season.
Vazquez improved her team-leading season average to .460 with a 3-for-4 effort in the second contest
UC currently holds the No. 2 spot in the West Virginia Conference heading into the final weekend of the regular season. The Golden Eagles next hit the road to face Glenville State for a 3:00 pm doubleheader on Friday, April 20.
