CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The University of Charleston football team signed quarterback Brett Benes of Cardinal Newman High in West Palm Beach, Fla., to a national letter of intent on Wednesday.
The 6-foot, 175-pound Benes threw for 2,560 yards and 31 touchdowns over the last two seasons, leading his team to an 18-5-1 record, including 11-1-1 in 2011, when Benes had 15 touchdowns and two interceptions.
Benes had FCS level interest from Penn, Delaware and Wofford.
Benes' high school coach was former University of Miami star and NFL quarterback Steve Walsh. Benes father, Edgar, was the Hurricanes' kicker and a Walsh teammate in the late '80s.
