29 Hits Enough for Softball Sweep of Glenville State

Kelsee Blackwell

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - 29 hits on the day lifted the University of Charleston softball to a doubleheader sweep of Glenville State by scores of 6-4 and 6-2 extending the Golden Eagles winning streak to six games, Friday afternoon.

Four doubles and five singles scattered throughout the second and third innings provided all the offense UC hurler Emily Fultz needed in securing the first game victory.

Ayla Santos (Calvert County, MD) delivered the opening strike with a sacrifice fly in the second to plate Logan Tretick (Round Hill, VA) who opened the second with her ninth double of the season. Tretick came through again in the next inning with an RBI double, while Bethany Cera (Bellaire, OH) joined her by driving in two runs with a two-baser of her own later in the inning. Leading hitter Janeen Vazquez (Cincinnati, OH) scored in the inning with a two base hit of her own as the Golden Eagles jumped ahead 6-0.

Fultz battled the Pioneers for her 21st complete game of the season. Her only marks came on a mistake in the third for a three-run homerun, while the home team added a single run in the fifth. In her 7.0 inning effort she struck out eight hitters for her 19th win of her rookie season.

The second and third inning again proved to be successful for Charleston in the second contest using the two frames to grab another 6-0 advantage on the scoreboard.

In a four run second, Vazquez drove home two runs with her team-leading 11th double of the season, while Tretick and Jacqueline Carlin (Whittier, CA) added RBIs in the inning.

Micki Murzynski (Erie, PA) blasted the final blow to Pioneers in the third with a two-run homerun, her second homer of the season.

Starter Kelsee Blackwell (New Castle, IN) cruised for her 10th win of the season by scattering eight hits and allowing just two runs in the fifth.

At the plate, Vazquez and Santos paced the University of Charleston with 3-for-4 efforts.

Charleston turns around for their final regular season doubleheader on Saturday, April 21 at 4:00 pm as the team travels to Ohio Valley.
