VIENNA, W.Va. - The University of Charleston wrapped up a successful regular season by using a 16-4 and 5-1 sweep of Ohio Valley to lock down the No. 2 seed in the upcoming WVIAC Tournament, Monday afternoon.
A first inning error gave Charleston an initial 1-0 advantage in game one before Ohio Valley tagged Golden Eagle ace
Emily Fultz (Germantown, OH) for four runs on two hits in the bottom half of the inning.
After giving up the big inning Fultz responded as she has all season long by putting the Fighting Scots on lock-down for the remainder of the game.
UC didn't score in the second inning then went on to light up the scoreboard with points every inning for the rest of the game, including six run spurts in the third and seventh frames.
Four homeruns highlighted the offensive explosion for the University of Charleston with
Ashlea Wallace (Winfield, WV) getting the party started with a solo blast in the third inning. Freshman
Aspen Echelmeier (Auburn, CA) followed the next inning with a two-run bomb of her own, while classmate
Ayla Santos (Calvert County, MD) joined in the fun to start the big sixth inning. Leading hitter
Janeen Vazquez (Cincinnati, OH) closed the blowout win with a three-run blast in her final trip to the plate.
Fultz booked her 20th victory of her rookie campaign with a 5.0 inning effort in the circle allowing just the two hits from the first inning, while striking out five OVU hitters.
The second contest featured
Kelsee Blackwell (New Castle, IN) rolling through the Fighting Scot lineup for her fourth-consecutive complete game effort.
Logan Tretick (Round Hill, VA) made the first mark on the scoreboard in the third frame with an RBI double to plate Vazquez. Santos followed the Tretick two-baser with a homerun to push the visitors lead to 3-0.
OVU got their only mark against Blackwell in the fifth by manufacturing a run off a leadoff single, but it would be all the offense they would be able to muster against the senior hurler.
Santos gave UC some breathing room with an RBI double in the sixth before scoring the final run of the day two batters later on a
Micki Murzynski (Erie, PA) single to seal the 5-1 score.
The win hands Blackwell her 11th victory of the season as she booked eight strikeouts against just six hits.
Taking the two wins cemented the Golden Eagles in the No. 2 slot for the WVIAC Tournament later this week. Charleston will now be set to play No. 7 seed Alderson-Broaddus at 12:00 pm on Thursday, April 26 in Vienna, W.Va.
UC swept the Battlers late last month in their regular season matchup as the Golden Eagles took 7-4 and 9-6 wins.
