BLUEFIELD, W.Va. - The University of Charleston men's tennis team fell victim to a tough draw in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament facing a familiar foe in WV Wesleyan who repeated a performance from the WVIAC Tournament for a 5-2 win, Sunday afternoon.
Charleston got the match started right by surprising the Bobcats with back-to-back doubles wins for a quick 2-0 advantage.
Samuel Humphrey (Watford, England) and
Dennis Okoth (Nairobi, Kenya) teamed up for a 8-4 win at the No. 1 doubles slot, while
Matthew Sherba (Oxford, OH) and
Richard Williams (Cincinnati, OH) stunned WVWV with an impressive 8-3 effort at No. 2.
WV Wesleyan took the defeats in stride and responded with a win in the No. 3 doubles position. From that point the WVIAC Championship contenders never looked back in taking four-straight singles matches to set up a rematch of the conference tournament championship with host Bluefield State.
The Golden Eagles wrap up the 2012 season with a 13-10 overall record that included a 5-3 mark in West Virginia Conference play.
