WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. - After pounding out 24 hits the University of Charleston softball team grabbed a doubleheader sweep of West Liberty 7-3 & 8-5 to keep their West Virginia Conference record spotless.

UC (22-12, 10-0) started the afternoon off with back-to-back singles by Logan Tretick (Round Hill, VA) and Ashlea Wallace (Winfield, WV). Tretick got the day's scoring started by crossing the plate on a two-out Janeen Vazquez (Cincinnati, OH) single through the left-side for a 1-0 lead.

The second inning proved to be a difference maker for the Golden Eagles as they put four runs in the book. Ayla Santos (Calvert County, MD) started the inning off with a double blasted to centerfield before scoring on a West Liberty fielding error in the next at-bat. Andrea Hayes (Columbus, OH) reached base ahead of Tretick and Wallace again pairing hits together . Jacqueline Carlin (Whittier, CA) put Charleston ahead 6-0 with an RBI single to score Tretick.

WLU got a single run in each of the first three innings before University of Charleston ace and five-time WVIAC Pitcher of the Week Emily Fultz settled in to cruise to her 15th victory of the season. Fultz put together another complete game performance, while striking out 11 Hilltoppers.

Two runs were added late for Charleston to secure the 7-3 win as Vazquez led the way for the Golden Eagles with a 3-for-3 outing, while accounting for two runs batted in. Tretick had a great effort in game one, as well, by going 2-for-3 with three runs scored.

A fielding error allowed West Liberty to get on the scoreboard first in game two against Kelsee Blackwell (New Castle, IN).

Vazquez answered the Hilltopper score by starting the second inning with a triple to left. She would score two batters later on a game-tying (1-1) double by Cera.

The teams were even through the third and fourth innings before the University of Charleston broke out for seven runs in the final three at-bats. The three-run fifth was highlighted by a two-RBI double by Tretick, whie Santos and Cera each scored the next inning on a key fielding error by West Liberty.

Cera closed the game and gave the Golden Eagles what would become key runs with a two-RBI double in the seventh putting Charleston ahead 8-1.

Three consecutive hits and a fielding error allowed the Hilltoppers to plate four runs (8-5) in the bottom of the seventh leading to head coach Ray Loeser to bring Fultz back in to seal the victory, which she did.

Blackwell earned the victory after six solid innings in the circle, while Fultz took her second save of the season.

Loeser and crew continue their conference road trip with a 2:00 pm doubleheader against WVIAC contender Davis & Elkins on Friday, April 6.
