CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Through a constant downpour the University of Charleston No. 12 ranked men's soccer team grabbed their first conference win of the season with a convincing 6-1 win over Alderson-Broaddus, Wednesday evening.
Nathan Schmitt (Muskegon, MI) slipped through the middle of the Battler (1-1) defense just six minutes into the game and took a direct pass from
Alexander Martinez-Gallardo (Vancouver, Canada) straight to the keeper. Schmitt won the 1-on-1 battle in front of the net blasting the ball past A-B goalkeeper Matt Robins for the quick 1-0 advantage.
Charleston (2-0-1) kept the pressure on the visitors with pinpoint passing and completely controlling possession from the opening touch. The Golden Eagles got on the board for the 2-0 lead after Alderson-Broaddus was charged with an own goal as they attempted to defend a nearly perfect corner kick from
Rob Vincent (Liverpool, England ).
At the 11 minute mark the Battlers managed to find a slip by the Golden Eagle defense to get a rebound shot past keeper
Sean Teepen (Cincinnati, OH ), but it would be the only offensive mark against Teepen in the game as after the goal UC buckled down with more physical play on their end of the field.
Renan Ramos (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) responded to the A-B score with an impressive play of his own when he followed nearly the same line Schmitt took for the opening goal. Ramos powered through the middle of the Alderson-Broaddus defense to take a Martinez-Gallardo pass 1-on-1 in front of the net. This time the keeper came off his line to attack the ball and Ramos responded by popping the ball just over Robins' outstretched arms allowing a clear look at an open net for the 3-1 advantage.
What seemed like the dagger that put the game away came at 16:41 when three-time All-American Vincent decided to save time in taking down the Battler defense by stopping just steps past midfield and firing a missle that scorched the back of the net. The 40+ yard goal got the rain soaked fans at Schoenbaum Stadium on their feet and gave the home team a safe 4-1 lead.
Jules Gabbiadini (York, England) tacked on the only marks of the second half to set the 6-1 score. Gabbiadini did his best to top the Vincent blast by taking a long-shot of his own from outside the box that found the net.
The University of Charleston outshot A-B 19-11 in the game, but the Golden Eagles dominated possession along with an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks for the contest.
