Volleyball Makes It Five in a Row with Win Over Bobcats

Box Score CHARLESTON, W.Va. - University of Charleston earned their fifth consecutive win Tuesday evening with a straight set victory over West Virginia Wesleyan College avenging a loss earlier in the season.

UC and Wesleyan met three weeks ago in Buckhannon where Charleston suffered a 3-0 loss at the hands of the Bobcats, but this match played out much differently.  Set one saw the Golden Eagles jump out to an early lead at 8-3 only to see Wesleyan fight their way back into the set and tie the set at 9-9.  The remainder of the set stayed close with teams trading points, but UC would never relinquish the lead and captured the first set 25-21.

Charleston again got off to a good start and held an 11-3 lead fourteen points into the set, but like the first set the Bobcats clawed their way back in and scored 16 of the next 21 points to grab a 19-16 lead.  The Golden Eagles were not to be denied and rattled off the next nine points to win the set 25-19 in front of the amped up home crowd.

Set three was played closely from the outset and the teams found themselves tied at 9-9 early on before UC went on a 14-5 run to hold a nine point advantage at 23-14.  The Bobcats rallied to try to fight their way back into the third and final set, but the deficit was too large and UC swept the Bobcats winning the third 25-19.

The Golden Eagles got an outstanding match from middle hitter Victoria Severo who led the Charleston attack with 11 kills and three block assists.  Samantha Swann put together a strong performance totalling eight kills in 24 attempts and three block assists.

Charleston moves to 16-8 overall and 7-4 in MEC play with the win over Wesleyan.  UC holds sole possession of third place heading into the final two weeks of the season with Shepherd a game behind at 6-4.

UC returns to the court Friday at 7pm  to host Glenville State.
