Box Score INSTITUTE, W.Va. - West Virginia State Yellow Jackets would rally past the Golden Eagles Tuesday night en route to a dramatic 3-2 win.
Charleston (11-6, 2-3 MEC) would easily win the first set 25-15 over the host Yellow Jackets and looked to be on pace for a quick win to take back to the Golden Eagle campus. UC would use nearly a .300 hitting percentage in the first set to take the 1-0 lead.
However, their efficient attacks from set one would not carry over to the second, as WV State would even up the match at one apiece. Hayley Kirby would be the go to attacker for the Jackets, accounting for 20 kills on the evening.
UC would regroup in set three and get back to setting up the UC front line of Larry and Severo for good attack opportunities from the passes of Reyes. The Eagles would grab the lead back 2-1 after outscoring the Yellow Jackets 25-17.
WV State would not go quietly into the dark this evening and would force a fifth and deciding set after grabbing a
25-19 win in the fourth frame. With that win the crowd and the Yellow Jacket sideline would get behind the ladies on the court, giving them all of the momentum heading into the fifth.
The Yellow Jackets would jump out to 9-1 lead with most of their points coming by way of the ace. Charleston would try to fight back but the deficit was too much as WV State would secure the 3-2 win after defeating the Golden Eagles 15-8 in the fifth and final set.
UC will get back to the court Friday evening at 7pm as they host Urbana University.
