Golden Eagles Drill Fairmont on Senior Day 45-0

Box Score CHARLESTON, W.Va. – UC rolled up 45 points Saturday afternoon on Fairmont State University  at UC Stadium en route to a 45-0 shutout of the Falcons on Senior Day.

Charleston forced the Falcons to punt on the opening possession of the game and the Golden Eagles took advantage of good field position going 53 yards on nine plays capped off by a 24-yard pass from Maurice Leak to John Knox to the  back left corner of the endzone to put UC up 7-0 with nine minutes to go in the first half.  Charleston's Justin Avery then picked off Fairmont State Falcon quarterback Cooper Hibbs at the Fairmont 31-yard line and returned it 20 yards to the Falcon eleven.  Again Charleston used the short field to punch in from two yards out on the fifth play of the drive with Leighton Settle running off the right side to make the score 14-0 with 4:49 showing on the first quarter clock.

The UC defense dominated the first half, giving up just 52 yards on 22 offensive plays ran by the visiting Falcons and the offense rallied behind the Golden Eagle defensive effort scoring on two more possessions before the half.  John Knox found Davon Henry on a 24-yard pass play behind two Falcon defenders midway through the second quarter to extend the Golden Eagle lead to 21-0.  The Charleston defense would force the fifth punt of the day for Fairmont and march 60 yards in two minutes with Settle running it in from 13 yards out to give UC a 27-0 lead going into halftime.

The second half started with fireworks for Charleston when Torie Wagner took the kick to the house down the left sideline to give UC a 33-0 lead just seconds into the third quarter.  After a couple change of possessions Charleston punter Brett Benes would pin the Falcons down at the 1-yard line and the UC defense swarmed  Hibbs in the endzone resulting in a safety and a 35-0 lead for Charleston.  The Falcons forced a Golden Eagle punt and took over in UC territory but the Golden Eagles came up big on a fourth down to keep Fairmont off of the scoreboard.  On the ensuing drive Knox hooked up with Henry for the second time of the afternoon for a touchdown, making the score 42-0 with 2:30 left on the third quarter clock.

UC added a 28-yard field goal by Brett Benes to start the fourth quarter extending the lead to 45-0 over the Falcons. Holding a big lead, Charleston played the second team offense for nearly all of the fourth quarter and came away with a 45-0 shutout of Fairmont as time expired.

Charleston improved to 6-4 on the season and 6-2 in the Mountain East Conference with the win while Fairmont dropped to 2-7 overall and 1-7 in MEC play.  UC finishes up the 2013 season on the road next week as they travel to Urbana, Ohio to take on the Blue Knights for a noon kickoff.
