Softball Opens Season With 1 Run Loss, Game 2 Postponed

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Wise, VA - Charleston Softball opened their season on the road Sunday against future Mountain East Conference member Univ. of Virginia - Wise.

UC dropped the first game of the double header 8-7, while the second game was postponed due to weather but the Golden Eagles held a 13-9 lead in the fourth inning before the game was stopped.

Second year Head Coach Ray Loeser's softball team opened its 2013 season on Sunday by jumping out quickly to a 5-0 lead on the Cavaliers before the home team scored five runs in the bottom of the 4th inning to tie the ball game up. UVa-Wise would add another run in the 5th inning to grab their first lead of the game, but Jacqueline Carlin (Whittier, CA) would get the lead back for UC in the top of the 6th after belting a two-run shot scoring Jenna Evans (Chapmanville, WV) making the score 7-6.

Walks would haunt the Charleston pitching staff for much of the game, but particularly in the bottom of the 6th inning where three Cavaliers would reach base without taking the bat off of their shoulders.  As a result, UVa-Wise was again able to reclaim the lead after scoring two more runs to give them an 8-7 advantage heading into the final frame.

UC was able to get a couple of runners on after singles by Hailey Tretick (Round Hill, VA) and Jenna Evans, but Carlin wasn't able to come through as she flied out to right field to end the game with the Cavaliers holding on to an 8-7 win in the opener for both teams.

In the loss the Golden Eagles (0-1) had seven players enter the hit column, including a two hit, three RBI game from leadoff hitter Carlin.  Rachel Hawks earned the win for the Cavs while Abby Nicholas (Warren, OH) suffered the loss for the Eagles.

The second game of Saturday's double header was suspended in the bottom of the fourth inning with the University of Charleston leading 13-9.   Carlin had started the second game going three for three including scoring three runs, while Janeen Vazquez (Cincinnati, OH) hit her first homerun of the season and accounted for four RBI's.The game will be finished next month when the Cavs visit the Golden Eagles for a double header.

Charleston returns to action on February 15th when they travel to Huntsville, AL for the Charger Chill Out.  They will face six different opponents during their three day trip to Huntsville.
