Box Score 2 Charleston, WV - The 2013 UC Baseball season got off to a slow start Sunday as the Golden Eagles dropped both games of the double header to visting California University - Pennsylvania.
Charleston was shutout in Game 1 losing to the Vulcans by a score of 5-0. Cal-Pa got the scoring going in the first inning on a bomb by their catcher Petty. The score would remain 1-0 until the 5th inning when a single would plate two more Vulcans making the score 3-0. Cal-Pa would add two more runs in the 6th to close out the game with a 5-0 win over the Golden Eagles. Despite the loss,
Jake Ciolfi (Narrgansett, RI) pitched a strong 4 1/3 innings giving up just one earned run on four hits. Designated hitter
Doug Chance (Coral Springs, Fla.) picked up two hits in the first game going two-for-three in the losing effort.
Game 2 saw more offense from both sides, but unfortunately for the Golden Eagles the Vulcans had too much for Charleston to keep pace with, falling to the visitors from Pennsylvania by a score of 13-4. Cal-Pa would score eight runs scattered through the first four innings before Charleston would score two runs on a double by
Sage Iacovone (Liberty Township, Ohio), making it 8-2 after four. The Vulcans would add another run in the fifth, but Charleston would score two more runs in the bottom half this time on a single by 1st baseman
Corey Hill (Leetonia, Ohio). That would be all of the scoring for UC as Cal-Pa would get four more over the next two inning, securing the 13-4 win.
The California University of Pennsylvania baseball team completed the three-game series sweep over UC with a 5-3 victory at Appalachian Power Park on Monday afternoon. The Golden Eagles drop to 0-3 this year with the loss, while the Vulcans improve to 3-0 overall.
The game would be scoreless through the first three innings before Cal-Pa would jump out to a 4-0 lead in the 4th after UC allowed three unearned runs on a few miscues. The Vulcans would add another run in the top of the fifth inning making it a 5-run lead, but Charleston would fight back in the bottom half of the inning on a RBI double by
Igor Molina (Coral Springs, Fla.) followed by a Hill single that would score two more, trimming the lead to 5-3. Unfortunately, that was all of the offense UC could come up with as the 5-3 score stood at the completion of 9 innings.
Golden Eagles starter
Alec Austin (Ronceverte, W.Va.) (0-1) suffered the loss after allowing five runs (one earned) on five hits in 5.0 innings of work.
Tyler Itnyre (Jefferson, MD) pitched four near perfect relief innings, not giving up a run and only two hits. Charleston left nine runners on base in the loss, including five in scoring position.
