Box Score 2 Petersburg, Va. - The University of Charleston Softball team completed a two-game sweep of Virginia State University Friday afternoon winning 7-4 in game one and 9-5 in game two.
Game one saw the Golden Eagles jump out to a 3-1 lead after the first two innings with RBI's coming from Vazquez, Tretick and J. Evans. The third inning is where UC would distance themselves from the Trojans as Charleston was able to plate three runs in the inning with Tretick and Evans picking up another RBI a piece making the score 6-1. VSU would add a run themselves in the bottom half of the inning, but would truly threaten in the bottom of the fourth, scoring two runs to close the gap to 7-4, before Nicholas would come in relief for Fain and shut down the Trojan offense for the next three innings picking up her first save of the 2013 season.
Jenna Evans would lead the UC offense, going 3-for-4 and knocking in two Golden Eagles. Fain would pick up her second win going 3 1/3 innings, giving up four runs on five hits while striking out two.
The second game of the afternoon was closely contested through the first four innings of action, as the score stood 2-2 heading into the fifth inning. The UC offense would erupt for four runs in the fifth, behind a pinch-hit double by Rolley that scored one, followed by a base clearing double by Browning that would bring in four Golden Eagles, making the score 6-2 after the UC at bat. Again the Trojans would narrow the gap, scoring a couple of their own in the fifth bringing them within two, 6-4. The two teams would trade runs in the sixth, before UC would put away VSU plating two in the seventh on a sacrifice by Stratton and a homerun by Browning, sealing the 9-5 victory for Charleston.
Morgan Aguirre would pick up her third win of the season, going 4 1/3 innings and giving up four runs on six hits. Browning had a big game in game two, going 2-for-4, driving in four runs including a solo shot.
Charleston gets back in action tomorrow at the Atlantic Region Challenge from Salem, Va.
