Golden Eagles Get Walk-off Win Over #15 Ranked Seton Hill

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Charleston, WV - The University of Charleston took Game 2 of the double-header against nationally ranked Seton Hill in dramatic fashion Wednesday, picking up a walk-off RBI in a 3-2 victory.

Charleston went up against one of the stronger baseball programs in NCAA Div. II Wednesday in Seton Hill and proved that they can play with any team in the nation.  UC started Game 1 strong as they plated four runs off Griffin starter Michael Bittel.  Corey Hill (Leetonia, Ohio) would start the scoring for the Golden Eagles on an RBI double that would bring in Robert Collin (Pembroke Pines, FL), followed by an Tyler Itnyre (Jefferson, MD) double that would clear the bases, bringing in three more to give UC an early 4-0 lead.  That score would remain the same until Seton HIll came up to bat in third inning where they would score two to narrow the lead to 4-2 in favor of Charleston.  The Griffins would score at least one run in the next four innings to take a 7-4 lead going into the seventh inning against UC.  Seton Hill would bring in Alex Haines, a projected top 5 round draft pick in next year's baseball draft, to protect the lead.  However, Igor Molina (Coral Springs, Fla.) would send an opposite field blast over the right field fence to bring Charleston within one but Haines would close the door on any UC hopes as he finally got through the inning to secure a 7-6 win for the visiting Griffins.

Game two was a pitchers dual between UC starter Jordan Banks (Chapmanville, WV) and Seton Hill's Sam Bashioum.  Each would throw five innings and give up two runs in the no decision before giving way to relief.  Seton Hill would start the scoring in the second inning on a sacrifice ground out to jump ahead of the Golden Eagles, 1-0.  Charleston would respond in the third, when Ryan Foster (Cincinnati, OH) came to the plate and smacked a two-run shot to snatch the lead back for UC, 2-1.  The score would remain unchanged going into the sixth inning, before Seton Hill would tie up the game on an error by the Charleston defense giving the Griffins a chance to steal a victory from UC.  With the score tied 2-2, the Golden Eagles came to bat in the seventh hoping to earn a their second victory against a nationally ranked opponent, and that's just what they did.  Brad Johnson (Cranberry Township, Pa.) started the inning with a single up the middle, then a nifty piece of hit-and-run by Sage Iacovone (Liberty Township, Ohio) sent Johnson to third with one out.  Mike Hoeft (SW Ranches, FL) stepped to plate just looking for a sacrifice fly to bring in the run but instead laced a shot down the right field line to bring in Johnson and give Charleston the 3-2 win.

Itnyre would pick up the win for Charleston (6-9, 4-2 WVIAC) while Hoeft was the hero at the plate and finished the game going 2-for-3 including the walk-off RBI.

UC will return to action Saturday as the take on D&E in a conference double-header starting at 1pm.
