Box Score 4 Charleston, WV - Davis & Elkins won three out of four games against the Charleston Baseball team Friday and Saturday dropping the Golden Eagles to 5-4 in WVIAC play.
Friday
UC would come up short in both games to the visiting Senators losing 11-2 and 5-2 at Triana Field. Charleston would strike first in Game One when
John Schraer (Cincinnati, Ohio) would hit a sacrifice fly that would bring in
Robert Collin (Pembroke Pines, FL), giving the Golden Eagles a short lived 1-0 lead. The Senators would then score 10 unanswered runs between the 2nd and 6th innings, taking a 10-1 lead. Miscues in the field by UC led to six unearned runs for D&E and ultimately too much for Charleston to overcome. The Senators would take game one from UC with a score of 11-2.
Jake Ciolfi (Narrgansett, RI) would take the loss for the Golden Eagles, going four innings and giving up seven runs in the outting.
Charleston would again put the first tallies on the scoreboard when
Brad Johnson (Cranberry Township, Pa.) would reach on a throwing error by the Senators that would score two Golden Eagles, giving UC a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning. That was all of the offense Charleston would manange and would only come away with one hit for the game against the Senator starter. D&E would put five runs on the board when it was all said and done, winning 5-2 and sweeping the games for the day.
Alec Austin (Ronceverte, W.Va.) would come away with the loss for UC, giving up four runs in six innigs of work.
Saturday
In a reversal from both games on Friday, D&E would strike first getting two runs in the first off of UC starter
Tyler Shreve (Jefferson, MD). This time it was Charleston who would respond with 10 unanswered runs with eight of those runs coming in a huge seventh inning. Shreve would settle in after the first inning, pitching six scoreless innings after the two run first while striking out nine Senator batters. Charleston would go on for a 10-4 win in the nine inning game. UC would pound out 13 hits for the game, getting multi-hit games from Schraer,
Corey Hill (Leetonia, Ohio),
Josh Easterling (Chapmanville, WV) and
Ryan Foster (Cincinnati, OH), who drove in four in the win.
The fourth game between the two teams proved to be the closest of the four-game series. Charleston would fall behind early to the Senators as D&E would score a run in each of the first two innings to take a 2-0 lead. UC would respond with a run in the bottom of the second on a
Zach Gresham (Chapmanville, WV) RBI single, to bring the Golden Eagles within one run. D&E would get that run back in the fourth inning only to have Charleston again score one of their own on a
Jordan Kirk (Chapmanville, WV) RBI single that would plate Easterling. With UC trailing 3-2 going into the seventh, D&E would get an insurance run that would pay dividends for the Senators. UC would get that run back on an Easterling single to bring in Foster to only trail by one. Charleston would have runners on the corners with one out when Collin lifted a fly ball to center field that appeared deep enough to score pinch runner
Zach Thaxton (Elkview, WV) from third, but the Senator center fielder threw a strike to the catcher who tagged out Thaxton in his attempt to tie the game. D&E would walk away with the 4-3 victory.
