Eagles Score 3 in Seventh to Earn Win against Wheeling Jesuit

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Wheeling, WV – The University of Charleston scored three runs in the 7th inning to pick up a 9-7 win on the road against Wheeling Jesuit University Tuesday before dropping game two 4-1.
 
GAME ONE
Trailing 3-0 going into the top of the 3rd inning, the Golden Eagles would plate four runs behind a pair of RBI singles by Ryan Foster and Igor Molina followed by a Corey Hill triple that would bring in two, making the score 4-3.  That lead didn’t last as the Cardinals would score three of their own in the bottom half of the inning getting back on top of Charleston, 6-4.  It wasn’t until the 5th inning before UC knotted the game back up on a pair of RBI’s coming from a John Schraer single and Tyler Itnyre double that evened the score at six each.  Again WJU would grab the lead back in the bottom half scoring on a Charleston miscue, taking a 7-6 advantage.  In the top of the 7th Schraer would tie the game at seven on a single to left field that drove in Molina.  UC would load the bases later in the inning and score 2 additional runs on a Brad Johnson RBI walk followed by a passed ball that brought in Schraer, giving Charleston a 9-7 advantage. Golden Eagle closer, Corey Lakatos, finished off the Cardinals in the 7th inning in picking up the save in the UC 9-7 victory.

Hill and Schraer would each gather two hits and two RBI’s for UC in the win.  Mike Hooper would pick up the victory for Charleston working 2 2/3 innings in relief for Jake Ciolfi.
 
GAME TWO
The Golden Eagles would struggle at the dish in game two against WJU, gathering only three hits in seven innings off Cardinal starter Weiss.  Patrick Chiaramonte would take the mound for the UC, throwing 5 innings in taking the loss.  Tied at 1 apiece, the Cardinals would do their damage in the 6th inning plating three runs to give them a 4-1 win at the end of the day.

Charleston’s record goes to 13-19 overall after the split and 10-11 in the WVIAC.

The Golden Eagles return to action on Saturday as they host Bluefield State for a weekend affair.  Games will be at Power Park with first pitch set for 1pm Saturday.
