Box Score 2 Charleston, W.Va. - The Golden Eagles would earn a split with West Virginia Wesleyan Sunday in WVIAC softball action, dropping game one 1-6 before snatching a 5-4 win in the second game.
GAME ONE
The Bobcats would get to
Courtney Fain early in the first game of the twin bill, scoring four runs in the first three innings before Charleston would get on the board in the fourth on a
Ayla Santos RBI single making the score 4-1 in favor of Wesleyan. The Bobcats would defeat Charleston 6-1 when it was all said and done.
Megan Malenstyn proved to be the Eagle killer in game one, going 2-for-3 while driving in five of the six runs for WVWC.
Janeen Vazquez and
Andrea Hayes each would go 2-for-3 in the UC loss.
GAME TWO
Charleson and Wesleyan would trade runs early on in game two, with the scored tied at 1-1 going into the sixth inning. The Bobcats would take advantage of some defensive miscues by Charleston to plate two runs in the top half of the inning, giving them a 3-1 lead and control of the game.
However, UC and
Kayln Butt had different plans. Vazquez and
Kendal LeFrancois would each single to put two runners on, but also had two outs on the board. The Golden Eagles would put together a two-out rally starting with a
Hailey Tretick single to load the bases. Coach Loeser would make the move to bring in Butt as a pinch hitter and she would deliver.
Butt would smoke a liner to the left-center gap that emptied the bases, giving Charleston their first lead of the afternoon at 4-3. UC would add an insurance run as
Jenna Evans would come in to run for Butt and would score after two consecutive wild pitches from the Bobcat pitcher, making it a 5-3 game going into the final frame.
Morgan Aguirre would work into trouble in the 7th inning. After retiring the first batter, Morgan would walk the next two forcing Coach Loeser to bring in Fain to finish out the game. The Bobcats would be aggressive on the bases as they would pull off a double steal to move runners to 2nd and 3rd with one out. The Bobcat hitter would hit a sharp ground ball to Hayes at short but she couldn't make the play allowing one run to come in. Leading 5-4 UC would walk Malenstyn, who knocked around Fain in game one, to load the bases. Fain would work the count full to the next Bobcat batter before delivering a pitch that the hitter couldn't connect solidly on that resulted in a soft pop fly to Fain to end the game, a 5-4 win for the Golden Eagles.
Charleston improves to 18-17 for the season and 9-5 in WVIAC play. The Golden Eagles hit the road for the four doubleheaders with the first at Concord on Wednesday.
