Charleston Solidifies Third with Split Against Glenville

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Charleston, W.Va. – In a battle between the third and fourth place teams in the WVIAC standings, Charleston and Glenville would split the softball doubleheader with the Golden Eagles dropping game one before rallying for a win in the second game.

GAME ONE

The Golden Eagles and Pioneers would find themselves in a pitcher’s duel in game one, with Courtney Fain toeing the rubber for UC.  Courtney would hold Glenville to just four hits, but one was costly in the third inning when Morgan Scarpellini would smack a 2-run homerun off a hanging changeup that gave the Pioneers a 2-0 lead.

Charleston would threaten in the sixth when Kelly Browning and Janeen Vazquez would lead off the inning with back-to-back singles to put two runners on.  Jacqueline Carlin would hit into a force play, but still left a pair of baserunners on when Jenna Evans would single up the middle to bring in Vazquez.  Unfortunately, that’s the only offense Charleston could come up with as Glenville worked out of the jam to escape with a 2-1 win.

GAME TWO

The Pioneers would strike first against UC in the third in game two, but Charleston would answer right back to tie the game on a RBI single to right by Carlin to drive in Andrea Hayes.  Glenville would grab the lead back in the fourth by knocking in one only to have the Golden Eagles immediately get that run back on a Ayla Santos triple over the Pioneer right fielder that scored Katelyn Hamilton from first to tie the game at 2-2.

UC would load the bases in the fifth with no outs after Hayes reached on an error, followed by Carlin reaching on a fielder’s choice and Evans drawing a walk.  The Pioneers looked like they were going to escape without surrendering a run after Vazquez struck out and Kayln Butt popped up, but a third Glenville miscue in the inning allowed Charleston to score two after a throwing error by the first baseman on a softly hit ball by Kendal LeFrancois.  UC would score two runs on zero hits and two errors to grab the 4-2 lead.

Morgan Aguirre would close the door on any hopes of a Glenville comeback after working through the sixth and seventh without any problems, picking up her 13th win of her freshman season.

Charleston improves to 26-19 overall and 17-7 in WVIAC games.  The Golden Eagles get back in action Saturday at 1:00pm against Ohio Valley University in the regular season finale.  This final home game of the season is Senior Day for the Golden Eagles as they honor the lone departing senior, Janeen Vazquez.
