Box Score Beckley, W.Va. - Charleston opened up WVIAC Tournament play as they battled the number 1 seed Seton HIll Griffins at Linda K. Epling Stadium in Beckley, WV. The Golden Eagles jumped on Seton HIll early 15-5 and held on for an upset win over the #9 ranked Griffins 16-14 to advance in the winners bracket. UC improves to 20-27 overall.
Charleston took a 4-0 lead in the top of the first. After a leadoff double by
Ryan Foster, the Golden Eagles used three Griffin errors to score four runs getting RBI's from
Corey Hill, Tyler Itnyre &
Sage Iacovone. Seton Hill got two runs back in the bottom of the first to cut the lead to 4-2.
The Griffins took the lead in the second on a three-run HR by Nick Sell. UC took the lead back in the fourth at 8-5 with four more unearned runs, taking advantage of the Seton Hill miscues to give Charleston the three-run cushion midway through the 9-inning game. Charleston continued to pound Griffin pitching in the fifth scoring 5 runs to increase their lead to 13-5. Foster would start the scoring with a 2-run double followed by RBI singles from
Robert Collin and
John Schraer.
UC added two more on a Collin 2-run double over the left fielder to push their lead to double digits in the sixth at 15-5 The Griffins scored six runs in the sixth to bring the game within striking distance at 15-11.
Charleston got one run back in the top of the seventh on a
Brad Johnson single up the middle to score Schraer that extended the Golden Eagle lead to 16-11. The Griffins would respond again, cutting deeper into the Charleston lead by plating three runs in the bottom half of the seventh to draw within two runs, 16-14.
UC would hand the ball over to Tyler Itnyre to bring home the Charleston victory as he pitched the final 2 1/3 innings giving up only two hits, allowing no runs to secure the huge upset over the #9 nationally ranked Griffins for the Golden Eagles.
Starter
Josh Weinberg picked up the win for Charleston, going 5 1/3 innings and allowing 8 earned runs while Itnyre earned the save. UC was led in offense by Collin who drove in four on a 2-for-6 effort with both hits being doubles.
The Golden Eagles will battle Concord at 3:30 tomorrow at the Linda K. Epling Stadium in Beckley.
