Charleston, W.Va. - The University of Charleston fired on all cylinders on both sides of the ball this evening in drubbing the visiting Hilltoppers from West Liberty University 42-13 at UC Stadium.
The Golden Eagles outgained West Liberty nearly two to one, piling on 450 total yards with 327 of those yards coming on the ground. Charleston running back Marvin Elam led the running attack for UC toting the ball 18 times for 152 yards and three touchdows. UC didn't need to do much through the air because of their effectiveness on the ground but Jermaine posted a 15-for-23 statline for 123 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Joey Augustin and Andrew Flohr each hauled in a TD for the Golden Eagles. Flohr's touchdown reception was his first for the maroon and gold.
UC's defense was dialed in this evening, limiting the high-powered Topper offense to just 237 yards and 13 points, seven of those coming in garbage time in the fourth quarter. Charleston forced four West Liberty turnovers with Logan Cox picking off Dakota Conwell twice to bring his interception total to five on the season. Conwell completed the game 10-for-25 and three interceptions for the Hilltoppers.
Charleston started the scoring in the first with Elam's first of three touchdowns coming from 11 yards out to give UC a 7-0 lead. West Liberty answered with a score of their own just before the end of the period to draw within a single point after the extra point was blocked. At the end of one, UC led 7-6.
A 21-point second quarter by the Golden Eagles gave Charleston complete control of the game. UC got scores from Kelly, Augustin, and Elam to take a 28-6 lead heading into halftime.
After the first quarter Charleston scored 35 consecutive points, adding a touchdown in each of the third and fourth quarters to take a commanding 42-6 lead before West Liberty scored a TD late in the fourth when the game was out of reach. The Golden Eagles took possession with 2:23 left in the game, rushed for a first down, then killed the clock to end the game, 42-13 in favor of Charleston.
The win takes UC to 6-3 overall and 5-3 in Mountain East play. UC gets an extended break as they travel to Fairmont on Satuday, Nov. 8 to take on the Falcons.
