Charleston's Avery Named MEC Defensive Player of the Year, 10 Others Garner ALL-MEC Honors

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. -- Concord University's Calvinaugh Jones has been voted as the Mountain East Conference Offensive Player of the Year, while teammate T.J. Smith is the league's Freshman of the Year. The University of Charleston's linebacker Justin Avery is the MEC Defensive Player of the Year, and Shepherd linebacker James Gupton is the conference's Defensive Freshman of the Year. Concord head coach Garin Justice has been selected as the MEC Coach of the Year. The awards were announced on Tuesday as the league also announced the All-MEC teams. The All-MEC teams and individual award winners are selected by a vote of the league's coaches.

Jones, a junior running back from Glen Burnie, Md., led the MEC in rushing with 1,372 yards -- a total that is 13th in the country. Jones averaged 124 yards per game and 7.0 yards per carry while finding the end zone eight times.  Smith, a freshman wideout from Charleston, S.C., hauled in a league-best 12 touchdown passes on the year for the Mountain Lions. He was also tops among all freshman and among the league leaders in receptions (46) and receiving yards (987) and yards per catch (21.5).

Justin Avery (Charlotte, NC), a senior linebacker from Charlotte, N.C., led one of the top defense's in the conference with 91 tackles (49 solo) on the year. He also contributed 12 tackles for a loss and 5.5 sacks for the Golden Eagles. 

Gupton, a freshman linebacker from Waldorf, Md., led all MEC freshmen in solo tackles with 36. He was the leading tackler on a Shepherd defense that led the country in rushing defense and a unit that was fourth in the NCAA in scoring defense.  In his fourth season at Concord, Justice led the Mountain Lions to an undefeated regular season (11-0) and the 2014 MEC title. CU also earned a berth in the NCAA Playoffs as the top seed in Super Region 1. Concord has also reached new heights in the polls being ranked as high as 10th this season.

Regular season champion Concord led all schools with 10 first team selections (six offense, three defense and one special teams). Charleston was next with nine first team honorees (two offense, six defense and one special teams highlighted below), and Shepherd had a pair of offensive lineman make the first unit along with four players on defense. Notre Dame had four players from its offense earn first team honors, Glenville State had a first team pick on both sides of the ball, and Fairmont State, UVa-Wise, Urbana and West Liberty all had one player selected to the first team.

Marvin Elam (Lawrenceville, GA), a sophomore running back who led UC with 1076 yards rushing and 16 touchdowns. 
Justin Johnson (Parkersburg, WV), a junior offensive lineman whose efforts helped lead a rushing attack that gained 225 yards a game.
Demetrius Reddick (Cleveland, OH), a senior defensive lineman that recorded 34 tackles, seven tackles for loss, and a half sack. 
Rockford Stone (Charlotte, NC), a senior defensive lineman who recorded 32 tackles, nine tackles for loss, and four sacks on the season.
Matt Duncan (Jonesborough, TN), a senior linebacker that was second on the team in tackles with 83, tackles for loss 11.5, and sacks with 4.5.
Isaiah Gibson (Hampton, VA), a senior defensive back who was third on the team with 70 tackles and second in pass break-ups with seven. 
Torie Wagner (Severn, MD), a junior defensive back and special teams First Team selection led the team with eight pass break-ups and second with four interceptions. Wagner also returned two punts and one kickoff for touchdowns this season.
