MOREHEAD, Ky. -- The University of Charleston men's tennis team fell to host Morehead State University 7-0 Sunday at the EAGLE Center to open the 2014 season.
Morehead State captured the double point after winning on court one and three. At No.1 MSU's Ji Hoon Heo and Jack Swindells defeated James Gammell and Dennis Okoth 8-1, and at No. 3 Nick Mercer and Enrique Samudio topped UC's Jacob Lorenz and Gabriel Seymour 8-1.
On the second court, Morehead State's David Clifford and Giovanni Samaha dropped an 8-7 decision to Charleston's Matthew Sherba and Davey Nelson.
Morehead State continued by winning all singles matchups in straight sets. On court one, Swindells knocked off Sherba, 6-2, 6-2. On the second court Samaha captured a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Gammell, and at No. 3 Heo outlasted Okoth 7-5, 6-3.
On the fourth court Mercer defeated Lorenz 6-2, 6-1. At No. 5 Clifford beat Varun Shah 6-2, 6-1, and on number six freshman Gabriel Ruiz came away victorious against Nicholas Bakos 6-4, 6-1.
The Golden Eagles quickly return to the courts on Tuesday to take on the University of Pikeville with the matches to be played in Logan, W.Va. at 6 p.m.
