UC Baseball Opens 2014 with 11-5 Win Over Fighting Scots

Box Score Charleston, W.Va. - The Charleston Baseball team opened up their 2014 campaign with an 11-5 victory over the visiting Ohio Valley University Fighting Scots Friday evening at Triana Field.

UC used an eight-run fourth inning to blow the game wide open before coming away with the six run win.  Charleston struggled from the plate the first three innings as Scot pitcher JR Davis made quick work of the Golden Eagles the first time through the lineup.  The second time through was a different story as Charleston batted around in the fourth with UC pounding out five hits in the big inning.

Ohio Valley made a charge in the seventh after UC starter Alec Austin started to tire.  The Golden Eagles surrendered four runs in the inning to make it just a three-run game, 8-5.  UC had an answer in the bottom of the eighth when Tyler Itnyre drove in two of his three RBI's  and Anthony Brunetti knocked in his second run of the game to extend the Charleston lead to six.

Freshman reliever Keiffer Hovorka earned a save, working one and two-thirds scoreless innings in his Charleston debut.  Alec Austin picked up the win, going nearly seven strong innings and striking out five Scot batters.

Charleston one through four hitters combined to go nine for 16, drive in six, and score six runs.

UC and Ohio Valley resume play tomorrow at 1PM from Triana Field as they play the second and third games of the three game series.
