CHARLESTON, W.Va. - After dropping their first three matches of 2014, the University of Charleston men's tennis team picked up their first win, defeating Centre College 9-0 Saturday afternoon.
UC started the day off quickly, picking up three wins in doubles with Dennis Okoth and James Gammell earning an 8-4 win at No. 1 Doubles and the tandems of Matt Sherba/Davey Nelson, and Gabe Seymour/Jake Lorenz took care of their opponents at the No. 2 and 3 Doubles with scores of 8-1.
The Golden Eagles continued their strong play, sweeping Centre in all six single matches in straight sets. James Gammell moved into the No. 1 singles spot and grabbed a 7-5, 6-2 victory. Nick Bakos had the toughest match of the afternoon but prevailed over Centre's Caleb Smith 6-3, 7-5.
Charleston will be back on the courts Saturday, March 1 at 1PM to open up MEC play against Shepherd University. The match will be played in Charleston with location to be deteremined
