The UC Men endured a myriad of obstacles on Wednesday afternoon, none providing more trouble than Tiffin College, who presented quite a tough challenge for the Golden Eagles. The match was scheduled to start at 8 AM, but rain delayed the start of the match until 11:45. The teams were then forced to relocate during the last two singles matches due to prior court reservations.
Â
Tiffin was able to capture two out of the three possible points in the opening doubles matches. Charleston's second doubles team of Matt Sherba and Davey Nelson fell in a close match 8-6 while Jake Lorenz and Gabe Seymour were corralled 8-3. The lone doubles point for Charleston was secured by Dennis Okoth and James Gammell at first doubles, winning 8-3.
Â
Charleston was able to dig deep in singles, however, mounting an impressive comeback to win the match by winning four out of six singles matches. Matt Sherba ground out a clutch victory at first singles 6-4, 6-4 and James Gammell eviscerated his opponent at second singles to win 6-1, 6-1. Tiffin responded by taking the next singles position against Dennis Okoth 6-3, 6-2. Nick Bakos secured Charleston's 4
th point at the five singles position after jumping out to a big lead in each set, but held on after a furious rally in each set to win 6-4, 6-4. Charleston almost secured the match at fourth singles as Jake Lorenz was able to come back from a set down to force a third set super tiebreaker, but eventually fell 6-4, 4-6, 10-3.
Â
That left the match tied at 4-4 with the sixth singles position winner determining the outcome. Davey Nelson was able to mount a comeback after losing the first set 6-2 to win the second set 6-3 and force a super tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker, Nelson was able to grind out a tight 10-8 victory to secure the match for Charleston. Nelson was upbeat following the victory, "It was a tough match, I knew that I didn't play well in that first set and he forced me into a lot of mistakes, but I knew I could take my game to another level and if I could play more consistently and keep to the game plan that I had a good chance to come back. My teammates were great, they were behind me the whole time and helped me keep my head in the match, I couldn't have done it without their support."
Â
The win extends Charleston's current winning streak to two, and after a Thursday off, the men will be back to play Erskine on Friday afternoon as they wrap up matches on Hilton Head Island for the week.
