UC Baseball Shuts Out Falcons Sunday

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – Charleston Baseball blanked Fairmont State on Sunday afternoon to close out its series with the Falcons at the Bridgeport Recreation Complex.

In game one of the double header, the Golden Eagles got on the board early with when Tyler Hathaway scored on a passed ball and Brad Johnson singled to right field to score Tyler Itnyre from third. UC scored three more runs in the bottom of the fifth to stretch their lead to 5-0 with just two innings remaining for the Falcons. The Falcons had runners on base in the sixth and seventh but were held off the scoreboard to give UC the victory.

Tyler Shreve pitched a complete game shut-out for the Golden Eagles, giving up just two hits. Shreve also struck out six and had a no-hitter going through five innings. Ryan Badertscher struck out six in 4.1 innings of work for the Falcons.

In game two, the game remained scoreless until the top of the fourth when Zach Gunter hit an RBI single for the Golden Eagles. UC scored the final run of the game in the fifth when a sacrifice fly from Tim Rein brought home Logan Valentine for the score. FSU left four runners on base in the final three innings of the game to allow Charleston to wrap up the 2-0 victory.

Patrick Chiaramonte picked up the shut-out victory for UC, allowing just four hits and striking out three batters. Nic Rush was charged with the loss for FSU after giving up two runs on six hits in the start for the Falcons. Rush struck out five batters in seven innings on the mound.

The pair of wins Sunday improves UC's overall record to 8-11 overall and 5-11 in Mountain East play. The Golden Eagles return to action Tuesday to host UVa. Wise in a midday doubleheader at Appalachian Power Park.
