Golden Eagles Split with Cavaliers

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CHARLESTON, W.Va. - After dropping the first game of Thursday's doubleheader with University of VIrginia College at Wise, UC grinded out a 2-1 win in game two at Triana Field.

Game One

The visiting Cavaliers jumped on the Golden Eagles in the second inning to open up the scoring.  Wise plated three in the inning after UC's starter Dylan Saunders got in trouble by walking a couple Wise batters and the Cavaliers took advantage of the pitcher's early inaccuracy.  Leading 3-0, Wise added another run in the third when Bill Steven hammered a deep shot over the left field fence that gave the Cavaliers a 4-0 cushion.

The score remained 4-0 going into the bottom of the sixth when the Charleston bats got hot.  An Anthony Brunetti double drove home two UC runners to start the inning and get the Golden Eagles within two, 4-2.  Michael Hoeft followed with a single that also plated two and evened the game up at 4-4.

The Cavaliers responded in the top half of the seventh inning with a run to grab the lead back at 5-4.  Timmy Rein singled to start the UC seventh  but was left stranded at second base as Charleston came up short on the losing end of the 5-4 game.

Game Two

The second game proved to be a pitcher's duel between as Charleston's Joseph Shiflett made his Golden Eagle starting debut.  After three scoreless innings UC broke the 0-0 tie in the bottom of the fourth when Brunetti drove in his third run of the day to give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead.  UC added another run in the sixth as Robert Collin's single knocked in Zach Gunter from second.

That was all the runs Shiflett needed as he worked all seven innings on the mound, giving up one run on five hits.  Charleston went on to win the game 2-1 to earn the doubleheader split.

The split takes Charleston's record to 9-12 overall and 6-12 in Mountain East Conference action.  UC hits the road this weekend to play Notre Dame College in a 4-game weekend series.
