WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. - The UC Men's Tennis Team defeated West Liberty in a conference showdown on Friday afternoon in a stifling 9-0 score line. UC opened up a 3 point lead after doubles, with seniors Matt Sherba and Davey Nelson quickly dispatching their opponents at 2
nd doubles 8-1 and Jake Lorenz and Nick Bakos winning 8-3 at 3
rd doubles. In 1
st doubles, Dennis Okoth and James Gammell outlasted their Hilltopper counterparts in a 9-7 marathon match.
In singles Matt Sherba outlasted his big-serving opponent 7-5, 4-6, 10- to win 1
st singles. At 2
nd singles James Gammell emerged victorious 6-2, 6-0 and Dennis Okoth locked up the match at 3
rd singles for the Golden Eagles, winning 6-2, 6-3. At 4
th singles, Jake Lorenz jumped out a quick lead and refused to give it up, winning 6-0, 6-4. At 5
th and 6
th singles, Nick Bakos won 6-0, 6-1 and Davey Nelson won 6-1, 6-1.
The win marks Charleston's fourth conference win of the season. "It was a nice team win for us considering historically we have struggled playing here," said Jake Lorenz after the match. Charleston moves to 8-5 overall on the season and remains undefeated in conference play at 4-0. Coach Santen was very pleased with the result, "The wind conditions were a huge factor today. I was proud of our guys because we found a way to use it to our advantage."
The men will return to the court on Saturday afternoon at the YMCA to take on regional opponent Edinboro.
