UC SOFTBALL MANAGES DOUBLE-HEADER SWEEP OF WV-TECH, 5-4 AND 9-1

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The University of Charleston women's softball team managed a non-conference double-header sweep of WV-Tech University, 5-4 and 9-1 Wednesday afternoon.

UC, which trailed game one until the bottom of the seventh, managed eight base runners in the first six innings but were unable to push runs across.  However, with four singles, a sacrifice fly, and two errors by the Golden Bears, Charleston generated five runs two of which scored on a pass ball to end the game with Charleston taking the 5-4 victory.  Courtney Fain pitched a strong four and two thirds striking out 10 while only surrendering two hits.  Angel Withrow picked up her first win of the season in her first appearance pitching two and one thirds innings while striking out five.  At the plate the Golden Eagles were led by junior short-stop Andrea Hayes who was three-for-four and sophomore second baseman Jenna Evans who added two hits as UC managed eight in the game.

Game two saw seven batters hit in the first inning for UC led by Samantha Herndon three-run blast, her fifth of the season.  Katelyn Hamilton was three-for-three with a homerun, triple, and two runs scored.  Rachelle Toppings and Hayes each added two hits apiece.  Abby Nicholas making her second start on the season took a no-hitter into the fifth inning when she was relieved by Morgan Aguirre as the two combined for just two hits while striking out five in the 9-1 shortened victory.

Charleston moves to 19-9 on the season and is 5-3 in Mountain East Conference play.  UC will travel to Concord University Saturday and then to UVA-Wise on Sunday for MEC match-ups.
