CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The Charleston Men's Tennis team used a dominating singles performance Friday evening to capture a 6-3 over Mountain East Conference rival West Virginia Wesleyan College at the Charleston Family YMCA.
Coach Matt Santen may have been a bit discouraged after doubles when the Bobcats held a 2-1 match advantage by taking the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles courts. Matt Sherba and Davey Nelson got UC on the board on the No. 2 doubles court, picking up a convincing 8-3 win and more importantly provided the spark the Golden Eagles were looking for.
Riding the momentum generated from the last doubles match, Charleston needed to take at least four of the six singles courts to stay unbeaten in Mountain East play. Dennis Okoth evened the match at 2-2 by winning 12 straight games after dropping the first three to come away with a 6-3, 6-0 victory at No. 3 singles. The Bobcats briefly took the lead back when Jake Lorenz suffered a hard fought three-set loss at No. 4.
With the match at 3-2 in favor of WV Wesleyan, Charleston's back was against the wall and did they ever respond. Nick Bakos started it for the Golden Eagles on the No. 5 court, grabbing an easy 6-2, 6-1 win. Man of the Match Matt Sherba disected his Bobcat opponent on the No. 1 court and picked up his second victory of the evening, 7-6 (3), 6-3. James Gammell provided the finishing touches for the Golden Eagles rallying back in both sets to grind out a 7-5, 7-5 No. 2 win and seal the match for UC. Wesleyan would forfeit the remaining court, giving Charleston five of the six singles courts and a 6-3 win.
UC's win improves their season record to 10-5 overall and 5-0 in Mountain East Conference. Charleston now has sole possession of first place in the MEC with only two conference matches remaining. UC leaves for North Carolina Monday to face two important regional foes in Winston-Salem State University and Shaw University.
