Charleston Splits First Two Games with Concord

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The Golden Eagles took game one 5-3 from Concord before dropping game two 3-0 Saturday afternoon at Triana Field.

GAME 1
Charleston struck early and often in the first game of the doubleheader and withstood a late rally from the Mountain Lions to come away the important 5-3 game one victory. Concord University scored on a sacrifice fly by Andrew Seigel and an RBI single by Bret Blevins in the sixth inning and an RBI single by Brad Sullivan in the seventh inning. Despite its efforts, Concord University couldn't finish the comeback as Corey Lakatos worked a one run seventh to earn the save.

Alec Austin picked up the win for the UC Golden Eagles. Alec pitched six innings and allowed no earned runs, five hits and no walks while striking out two. Ryan Weatherholtz was the game's losing pitcher. He lasted six innings, walked one, struck out seven, and allowed five runs.

Charleston stayed on top until the final out after taking the lead in the first, scoring one run on an RBI single by Tyler Itnyre.  The Golden Eagles scored one run in each of the second, third, fifth, and sixth. In the second, UC scored on an RBI single by Robert Collin, scoring Anthony Brunetti. UC Golden Eagles scored on an RBI single by Jordan Banks, plating Ryan Foster in the third to take a 3-0 lead over the Mountain Lions.  Charleston put another run on the board in the fifth inning after a Brad Johnson single knocked in Tim Rein.  Leading 4-2 heading into the bottom of six, UC added another insurance run when a Ryan Foster double to left center brought around Zach Gunter who reached on a single and stole second earlier in the inning.


GAME 2
A tight game was decided in the sixth inning as Charleston fell to Concord University 3-0 in game two on Saturday.

Tyler Coyle got the win for Concord University. He pitched seven shutout innings. He struck out one, walked one and surrendered three hits.  Andy Hoyer took the loss for the UC Golden Eagles. He worked six innings for the Golden Eagles, walked two, struck out one, and allowed three runs.

The game was never in doubt after the sixth, as Concord University scored three runs on two singles.

The Golden Eagles stand at 11-14 overall and 7-14 in Mountain East Conference play.  UC and Concord resume play today for games three and four from Triana Field with first pitch set for 1pm.
