UC Splits Doubleheader with Yellow Jackets

Brandon Pedley Delivered Game Winner in Game 1 vs. WVSU
Box Score The University of Charleston and West Virginia State split a Mountain East Conference doubleheader Saturday at Calvin L. Bailey Field in Institute, with the Golden Eagles winning 1-0 in the first game and the Yellow Jackets prevailing in the second 4-2.

Both starters went the seven-inning distance in the opener, which was scoreless until the top of the seventh, when UC pushed across the game's only run. Brad Johnson led off with a walk, moved to third on Anthony Brunetti's double and scored on a one-out base hit by Brandon Pedley. State starter Russell Thompson carried a one-hitter into the final frame but was the hard-luck loser. He struck out eight and walked four.

UC's Tyler Shreve got the shutout win after allowing eight hits, including three by State catcher Anthony Payne. Shreve walked one and struck out two.

In the second game, UC grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI ground out by Brunetti, but State answered with a pair of two-run innings — Jack Hudson had a two-run double in the fourth and Noah Blackhurst delivered a two-run single in the fifth. The Golden Eagles scored in the top of the seventh on Mike Hoeft's sacrifice fly, but Josh Falbo came on to retire the final batter to record the save in relief of winning pitcher Devin Bowles, who allowed four hits and two runs (one earned) with three strikeouts and no walks in 6 2/3 innings. Andy Hoyer went the distance for UC, allowing seven hits while striking out one and walking two.

UC (22-22 overall, 17-22 MEC) and State (28-17, 24-14) will do it again with another doubleheader today in Institute, starting at 1 p.m.
