Cheerleading Announces Tryout Information for 2015

University of Charleston Cheerleading Spring 2015 try-out information
 
  1. Try-outs are scheduled for Saturday, April 11, 2015, 10:00 AM. I am anticipating the squad being comprised of up to 20 women. This number represents four-plus all-women stunt groups. Men are welcome to try-out.  At this try-out, you are responsible for your own travel, accommodations and meals. Bring your insurance information (company, policy numbers) and emergency contact information. Try-out in plain dark shorts and a light colored shirt with cheerleading shoes. No jewelry or gum and hair pulled up. There will be clinics on Wednesday and Thursday, April 8-9, 5:00-7:00 PM. Both the try-out and clinic are held in the Upper Gym in Eddie King Gym. The clinics are highly encouraged.
 
  1. Performances The squad cheers at football and women's and men's basketball games. Special performances may include pep rallies and other community and university events.
 
  1. $350 cheer team dues (for new members to the team- final amount to be determined by April 2015): this will include your shoes, practice gear, bow, warm-ups, duffle bag, …You need to provide short white socks and maroon boy briefs (for under your skirt). You will be provided a uniform, and pom pons.
 
  1. Fundraisers The squad participates in fundraisers. The plan is to host a youth cheerleading clinic before one of the home football games where the clinic participants will then cheer the first half of the football game on the sidelines.
 
  1. Try-out clinics will be clinics on Wednesday and Thursday, April 8-9, 5:00-7:00 PM. Both the try-out and clinic are held in the Upper Gym in Eddie King Gym. The clinics are highly encouraged.
 
  1. Scholarships There are cheerleading scholarships available based on talent and financial need. I will have a better idea of how much money I can award after you have applied and submitted your FASFA.
 
  1. Required skills for try-outs include a home cheer (something you bring to showcase your motions: include a minimum of high-v and low-v) ; jumps (toe touch and one other); partner stunts:  ALL WOMEN BASES: elevator/ twist-cradle, elevator extension/ cradle, liberty, and an ELITE** stunt (stunting will only be completed to the maximum stunt the stunt group can do SAFELY); and the candidate's own routine (showcasing your best quality: another jump or partner stunt; tumbling; a cheer or dance. Mats will be available. The gym has a hardwood floor. Tumbling is optional but encouraged if you can tumble. Previous cheerleading experience (including stunting is requested, but not required. You will also need to do 30 push-ups. We do squad push-ups as a squad after football scores. In our 62-0 win over WVSU, we did 333.
 
**ELITE stunts: cupie (awesome) scorpion, arabesque, bow and arrow, scale, heel stretch or torch.
 
  1. Academics you MUST maintain a 2.0 cumulative grade point.
