Box Score CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The University of Charleston Golden Eagles Men's Soccer team built upon last Thursday's win over Gannon University with a spirited performance to defeat Mercyhurst, 4-1.
UC started with high intensity, which paid off within two minutes when Renan Ramos slipped a through ball for Augusto Maciel, who scored to take an early 1-0 lead. Mercyhurst would not be done by that goal, though, and tried to muster a few attacks, which the UC defenders dealt with calmly. In the 33rd minute, Bruno Oliveira set up Maciel for his second goal of the night. The half ended with UC leading, 2-0.
The second half started with Mercyhurst applying pressure, but the Golden Eagles responded positively, with Ramos scoring his third goal for the season. He dribbled pass three Mercyhurst defenders before shooting past the goalkeeper low at his near post. In the 67th minute, Will Roberts latched on to a rebound from a Ramos' free kick, which the goalkeeper spilled, to give UC a 4-0 lead. The goal marked Roberts' third of the season.
Mercyhurst responded in the next minute when Fernando Martinez scored on a corner kick taken by Danny Deakin. UC goalkeeper Fabian Veit finished the game tallying two saves.
The UC men will be in action again on Wednesday at Slippery Rock, looking to improve on their 2-0-0 record so far this season.
