Box Score URBANA, Ohio – University of Charleston won their sixth consecutive game this afternoon, easily dismantling the Blue Knights, 37-12, at Urbana University Stadium.
The Golden Eagles (7-1, 7-1) won the game between the tackles, rumbling for 214 yards on 53 carries. UC grinded out 24 first downs and converted on exactly half of their third-down conversions, going seven of 14, and was even more effective on fourth down, picking up three first down and four attempts.
Tevion Cappe and
Marvin Elam each ran for a touchdown while
Jeremy Johnson threw for three scores, two of which hit
Joey Augustin. Augustin's two TD catches made him the career leader in touchdown receptions (18) and has tied single season mark with nine.
After jumping out a 13-0 lead over the Blue Knights (2-6, 1-6) on Johnson's touchdown passes to Augustin and
Brandon Elswick, Urbana answered with a touchdown, their first TD at home this season, to trim UC's lead to seven, 13-6. Charleston tacked on a
Brett Benes 27-yard field as time expired on the first half clock with UC holding a 10-point lead, 16-6.
The Golden Eagles busted the game open in the second half, scoring 21 consecutive points on Cappe and Elam's short TD runs and Johnson's second hookup with Augustin on the afternoon to give Charleston a commanding 37-6 advantage early in the fourth. The Blue Knights stopped the onslaught by adding a meaningless touchdown midway through the final quarter to make it 37-12 which ended up being the score as the clock expired.
UC has a short week as they welcome West Virginia Wesleyan College (1-6, 1-6) to town for the MEC/MetroNews Thursday Night Game of the Week. Kickoff is slated for 7:10 p.m. at University of Charleston Stadium.
