RICHMOND, Va. - Virginia Union's Ray Anderson broke a 69-69 tie with under a minute to play and hit a free throw with four seconds left to lift the Panthers to a 73-71 win over Charleston at Barco-Stevens Hall on Sunday afternoon.
Charleston falls to 2-4 on the season and have lost their last two games by a combined five points, both in the final seconds of action in the game. UC was led by Darrion Stokes-Graham's 17 points and five rebounds followed by Jevonte Hughes who chipped in 15 points and nine boards. Both Hughes and Stokes-Graham came off the Charleston bench which saw them outscore the Panther bench 43-24 on the day.
The Golden Eagles built a 10-point lead midway through first half after consecutive buckets by Travon Williams and still held a narrow 37-34 advantage heading to the break. Virginia Union captured their first lead of the second half four minutes in after a Tavon Mealy layup on a Charleston turnover. UC would commit 12 on the afternoon. The Golden Eagles quickly got back on top and held an 8-point, 54-46, advantage with 10:58 to play in th contest before the Panthers rattled off nine straight points to again get back on top by one, 55-54.Â
The final nine minutes were played with neither team having a lead larger than three points, but Virginia Union hit the shot that mattered most with 42 seconds remaining that carried them to 73-71 victory.
UC returns to action on December 3rd, traveling to Urbana in a Mountain East Conference matchup. The Golden Eagles are currently 1-1 in MEC play.Â
