CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Charleston erupted for 644 yards of total offense in a 56-21 win over Alderson Broaddus University on Senior Day at University of Charleston Stadium Saturday afternoon.
Golden Eagle quarterback
Jeremy Johnson broke his own single game passing mark, which he set last week, with 316 yards through the air and three touchdown tosses. He also led the rushing attack for Charleston with 89 yards on nine attempts.
Jermaine Kelly spelled Johnson late in the second half to run for 80 yards and two scores, including a 57-yard scamper.
UC running back
Marvin Elam accounted for 176 yards on the day, 121 of it coming on 5 receptions while also adding a rushing TD.
Rashawn Dickerson hauled in two scores on four catches and
Johnny Delahoussaey had 93 yards on three catches, including a 31-yard TD reception.
Senior Day couldn't have started any better for the Golden Eagles after winning the coin toss and deferring to the second half, AB fumbled the opening kick and
Zaire Lewis scooped up the ball to return it 15 yards for a score. Leading 21-7 late in the first quarter, Charleston took advantage of the Battlers' second turnover when
James King pounced on a fumble in the end zone that gave Charleston a commanding 28-7 lead.
UC's offense stalled in the second quarter and the Battlers closed the gap to two scores, 28-14, heading into halftime. Coach Kirkland must have had a strong message for his time in the locker room as Charleston marched 79 yards in one minute and nine seconds on their opening drive to increase their lead to 35-14 after Dickerson's first TD catch of the afternoon. AB answered quickly as Bruggeman connected with Schroeder for the second time and was once again within two scores. It was all UC from that point forward, scoring the next 21 points on Kelly's two touchdown runs and Dickerson's second TD reception.
When the horn sounded and the clock showed double zeros, it was UC 56, Alderson Broaddus 21.
The #20 ranked Golden Eagles have a short week as they head south to Wise, Virginia to take on the Cavaliers on Thursday night. A win over UVa.-Wise will give UC its tenth win and will guarantee them a spot in the NCAA Division II Football Playoffs, a first in Golden Eagle Football history.
