Charleston Baseball Splits with Cavaliers

WISE, Va. – The University of Charleston baseball team ended their eight-game skid in Mountain East play after splitting a midweek doubleheader at University of Virginia College at Wise on Wednesday afternoon, taking game one 11-6 before falling in game two 5-4.

Charleston (5-11, 4-10 MEC) trailed the Cavaliers 4-2 heading into the fourth inning of game one before erupting for a seven-run fourth to take a commanding 9-4 lead.  Anthony Brunetti, Zach Gunter and Matthew Houser all doubled in the inning accounting for five of seven runs driven in the Golden Eagles in the big frame.  Houser finished the game going 2-for-3 with two doubles and three RBI's en route to the 11-6 Golden Eagle win.

Kaleb Kinder and David Webb split the duties on the mound to allow six runs on 12 Wise hits over the course of seven innings.

Game two saw UC carry a 4-3 lead into the seventh inning before giving up two runs in the bottom of the inning to take a tough 5-4 loss.  Charleston only managed six hits off the Cavalier pitchers but still carried the one-run lead into the final at bat for Wise.  The Cavaliers came through with clutch two-out hitting to score the tying and winning runs and hand Charleston its 11th loss of the season.

Jordan Banks and Luke Yingling each worked over three innings for UC with Yingling taking the loss after surrendering the winning run in the seventh.

Charleston returns to action this weekend to host Notre Dame College in a four-game series at Triana Field starting at 1:00 p.m. Saturday.
