FSU's Buzzer Beater Ruins UC's Upset Bid

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Golden Eagles dropped a nail biter to the #5 ranked Fairmont State University 66-65 Sunday evening at the Charleston Civic Center. The Falcons' Jamel Morris made a three-pointer with four seconds remaining to steal a victory from the host as Tino diTrapano's attempt at the buzzer fell short with Charleston dropping their third straight.

After trailing by just one, 31-30, going into halftime the Golden Eagles built a second-half lead of nine points with under 12 minutes left in the contest and seemed poised to pull off the upset of the visiting Falcons.  Fairmont had an answer and scored 12 of the next 14 points to take a 52-51 lead with seven minutes remaining.  Charleston wasn't shook by the Falcons run and again took control of the lead down the stretch, holding a narrow two-point advantage with 16 seconds left on the Civic Center clock after a couple free throws by Aleks Kesic.

After a series of misses from Fairmont, UC couldn't corral the rebound and gave the Falcons one final attempt from an out of bounds play with five seconds to go.  The FSU in-bounder found Jamel Morris outside the arc behind a double screen and he knocked down the game-winner to escape the upset.

UC returns to the Civic Center Tuesday evening to host Shepherd University with tip-off set for 7:30 p.m.
