BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – The suffocating Golden Eagle defense held West Virginia Wesleyan to 29% shooting as Charleston earned a 53-45 road win Saturday over the Bobcats.
Â
Charleston senior guard Tino diTrapano led all scorers with 17 points to pace UC, while Jevonte Hughes chipped in 10 points and nine rebounds in the win. The win puts the Golden Eagles one game over .500 both overall (8-7) and in Mountain East Conference play (5-4) heading into Monday's home contest against Glenville State College.
Â
UC built their lead early, holding a 19-12 advantage with 7:37 left in the first half. Both teams would go scoreless for nearly five minutes before a jumper by Aleks Kesic gave the Golden Eagles a nine-point cushion. The Bobcats scored only four points the remainder of the first half as Charleston took a 24-16 lead into the locker room at the half. WVWC was miserable from the floor in the first 20 minutes, making only four field goals and shooting 18%.
Â
The eight-point lead was enough as Charleston and Wesleyan played even the final 20 minutes, with UC holding on to the eight-point win, 53-45.
Â
Monday's home game versus the Pioneers is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Charleston Catholic Athletic Complex.
