WHEELING, W.Va. - The University of Charleston men's and women's basketball teams dropped a pair games to Wheeling Jesuit University Saturday afternoon at the McDonough Center. Â
The Golden Eagles women (7-13, 5-9 MEC) played tough for three quarters before falling to the Cardinals (17-3, 12-2 MEC) by 11 points, 64-75. Â UC trailed by only four points heading to the final ten minutes but were outscored by seven in the final frame. Â Points off turnovers continue to be a thorn in Charleston's side as Wheeling converted 22 UC turnovers into 29 points on the other end. Â Golden Eagle junior Mya Walker led all scorers with her season-high 22 points in the loss.
Charleston's men played their second consecutive game facing an opponent with a top-10 national ranking, this time the #5 ranked Cardinals(20-1,13-1 MEC). Â On paper it was an even matchup in nearly all statistical categories with one exception, free-throw attempts and makes. Â The host Cardinals shot 11 more shots from the charity stripe and also outscored the Golden Eagles by 11 from the line, making 25 compared to UC's 14. Â Charleston (11-10, 8-7 MEC) rallied at the end of the first half to trail Wheeling by seven, 30-37, after a Jevonte Hughes dunk ended the first 20 minutes. Â UC scored the first two points of the second half to cut it to five but that would be as close as the Golden Eagles would get over the final 20 minutes as Wheeling cruised to the 79-66 win.
Jevonte Hughes led UC with 19 points and eight rebounds, follwed by Tino diTrapano's 16 points and six assists.
Charleston returns home to face Notre Dame College Thursday evening at the Charleston Civic Center with action starting at 5:30 p.m. for the women, followed by the men at 7:30 p.m.
